At Free To Choose Network, we refuse to rest on our laurels. At the same time, we realize some of the best ideas are timeless. So how can timeless ideas create value in new circumstances? How can new ideas shed light on past progress? And how can ideas serve the end of human flourishing?
In the spirit of these questions, consider Ideas Matter – a project of the Free To Choose Network. Whenever we undertake a new project, we ask ourselves: “Does this serve our corporate purpose?” Consider:
To use accessible and entertaining media to build popular support for personal, economic and political freedom. We believe these freedoms are interdependent and must be sustained by the rule of law.
In service of this purpose, we knew we couldn’t just throw any old blog up on the Web. There has to be something special to undertake this—something that signals both our capabilities as a cutting-edge media organization as well as our connection to the winning ideas of liberty.
Bob Chitester – Free To Choose Network’s founder – already had a bee in his bonnet by 1980 when he created the original Free To Choose with Milton Friedman: Capture great thinkers with great ideas on video. Since then, he has amassed an unbelievable repository of video on some of the greatest classical liberal minds of the 20th Century. From early footage of people like Hayek, Friedman, Buchanan and Simon to more contemporary lights such as Hernando de Soto, Mohammed Yunus and Johan Norberg. As much as we’d love to monetize all this amazing video, its greatest value can be realized if we offer it to the world at virtually no cost.
And that is our modus operandi. From iconic explanations offered by the likes of Friedman above, to riveting discussions between people whose conversations we are very lucky still to have—we offer media that builds on and strengthens the classical liberal tradition. In short, we offer video of the best in big ideas. We will augment that video with framing, explanation and commentary that people who love freedom can appreciate.
But don’t take our word for it. Visit from time to time. Keep us honest. Help inspire us. Heck, send us good video suggestions. Our executive editor and lead writer, Max Borders, will be spearheading this effort and eagerly awaits your feedback. We hope you’ll use the comments and contact channels to help us continuously improve. We want this to be a place where new conversations take place. We also want to expand beyond the echo-chamber of most libertarian outlets. So please: help us share. In an online universe crowded with blogs, why does any of this matter? Because ideas matter. And with all of humanity as the customer-base, we have our work cut out for us.
